May 2006 can be characterized rather cold and in its second half also rainy. Especially the last decade of the month was very cold – the night temperatures decreased under the limit of 10ーC, what is really low figure for this period. As far as rainfall intensity is concerned, its development was very unequal. During the first half of the months there were no precipitations registered, the rains came only in the second half of May. In total, 72,2% of the long-term average of precipitations has fallen. Aggregate rainfalls since the beginning of the year reached 139 mm, what means 9 mm less than long-term average. On 20th May there was a hail-storm in the Saaz region – especially the hop gardens in Rakovník county were widely affected (namely the cadastral communities Mutějovice, Nesuchyně, Milostín, Hředle, Svojetín, Kněževes, Hořesedly, Pochvalov). The extent of the damages is different. The Hop Research Institute Co. Ltd. has elaborated immediately the set of instructions towards implementation of basic precautions against further deterioration of damaged areas.

Growth report

The development of hop vines in May 2006 was prejudiced by retardation in development, caused by climate conditions in March and April. Relatively cold and in the first half of the months also dry weather decelerated the stretching growth of hop vines. In this manner, especially hop vines cut by the end of April were influenced. The training of hops (Saaz semi-early red bine hops) started between 8th and 10th of May in majority of cases. Due to very low temperatures in the middle of May it was necessary to apply nitrogen-based fertilizers without delay. The areas, which needed the chemical protection against alfalfa snout weevil (Otiorrhynchus ligustrici L.) or against the occurrence of spring generation of flea beetle (Psylliodes attenauta Koch), were treated in accordance with The Methodology for Hops Protection. Systemic fungicide Aliette 80 WP – efficacious substance fosetyl-Al in 0,3% concentration – was applied with the view of suppression of primary infection of downy mildew of hops (Pseudoperonospora humuli Miy et Takah.). At the moment the hops plants are lower, in comparison to the previous years, owing to the delay of vegetation growth and unfavourable climatic conditions. The losses caused by hail-storms are still not specified. The particular producers apply the measures recommended by The Hop Research Institute Co. Ltd. The final estimation of losses could be done by the end of June, at the earliest.
